WordPress vs Wix vs Squarespace for Australian Small Businesses (2026)

The comparison without the affiliate links: what each platform really costs over five years, the SEO reality, who owns what, and who each one genuinely suits.

The builder ads make it sound settled: drag, drop, done, why would anyone pay for a website? Here is the part the ads skip. Wix and Squarespace are genuinely fine for a hobby or a placeholder, and WordPress built properly is what you choose when the site needs to bring in business. The differences are invisible in a demo and expensive in year two: speed ceilings, structural limits, and the door out.

The five-year cost truth

Builders look cheaper because the number is monthly and small. Stretch it over the life of a business website and the picture flips:

Wix / Squarespace Custom WordPress
Year 1 $300-$600 (plan + domain) $1,499-$4,999 build (domain + hosting included with us)
Years 2-5 $300-$600 every year, forever ~$275/yr hosting & care
5-year total $1,500-$3,000 for a rented template $2,600-$6,100 for an owned asset
At year 5 you own Nothing you can take with you The site, the domain, the content, the rankings

Similar money over time. Completely different outcome. The ownership details matter enough that we wrote them up separately: do you actually own your website?

The SEO reality

Builders have improved, and they still hit ceilings WordPress does not have. You will fight for the structure local SEO needs (a real page per service and suburb), speed is capped by their shared platform, and you cannot fix what their code does under the hood. Every ranking result we publish, 1,751 keywords for Cairns Auto Works, top 3 for MYBUILD, came off custom WordPress builds where we control every millisecond and every tag. The structural why is in SEO for tradies.

Where Wix and Squarespace genuinely win

Honesty cuts both ways. A builder is the right call when:

  • You need a placeholder this weekend and money is genuinely tight (though our TradeProof plan includes a real starter site for $399/mo, which changes that maths).
  • It is a hobby, club or side project where leads do not pay your mortgage.
  • You enjoy tinkering and the site is part of the fun.

What a builder is not: a growth plan for a business that lives on local leads.

The WordPress caveat nobody mentions

Bad WordPress is worse than good Wix. A $300 theme stuffed with 40 plugins is slow, fragile and hacked by Tuesday. WordPress wins when it is built clean (hand-coded, few plugins, maintained) and loses when it is a plugin junkyard. That is a builder-quality problem, not a platform problem, and it is why choosing the designer matters more than choosing the platform.

Migrating off a builder

Moving from Wix or Squarespace to WordPress is routine for us: content comes across, design gets rebuilt properly, and the old URLs get redirected so you keep any Google equity. If your builder site has plateaued, that is usually the moment. When to redesign covers the timing.

Not sure which side of the line you are on? Book a discovery call and describe the business. If a builder genuinely serves you better, we will say so, it costs us nothing to be straight with you.
