Website, SEO, Ads, Social: The Full Stack Explained (What to Buy, in What Order)
Website, SEO, Google Ads, social: what each layer actually does, the order to buy them in, and the expensive combinations that never work. The whole ladder, honestly.
Say the budget is $2,000 a month and the goal is more work. Website? SEO? Ads? Social? The honest answer is a sequence, not a pick: website first, then SEO or Ads depending on how fast you need jobs, then the other one, then social. Skipping a rung is where the money disappears, and the most expensive version is ads pointed at a site that cannot convert them.
The four layers and their actual jobs
| Layer | Job | Speed | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website | Convert attention into contact. Every other layer points here | Immediate, once built | Bring its own traffic |
| SEO | Own the searches, compounding, gets cheaper per lead over time | Months (the timeline) | Fill next week’s calendar |
| Google Ads | Buy tomorrow’s leads at a price per click | Days | Compound. Stop paying, stop existing |
| Social | Trust, memory, referral warm-up | Ongoing | Catch people who need you today |
The order, and why
- Website first, always. It is the multiplier on everything else: ads into a bad website is paying for leads and losing them at the door (how sites lose jobs).
- Need work now? Ads. Building for next year? SEO. Ads buy speed, SEO buys ownership (the full comparison). Booked-solid trades can skip ads entirely.
- The strongest position is both: ads hold the line while SEO compounds, then ad spend drops as rankings take over the same searches. That crossover is the plan, not an accident.
- Social last, but not never. It multiplies referrals and reassures the shortlist (what it actually does).
The combinations that waste money
- Ads with no website worth landing on: the most common and most expensive mistake we see.
- SEO on a site that cannot convert: rankings arrive, phone stays quiet, SEO gets blamed.
- Social as the only channel: invisible to every “plumber cairns” search happening today.
- Everything at once on a small budget: four thin layers lose to one strong one. Stack in order.
What this looks like in practice
Cairns Auto Works ran the full ladder: rebuilt website, then SEO to 1,751 keywords, and the result is 300+ leads a month and 4x revenue with search doing the heavy lifting (the numbers). The stack is also literally our menu: websites, SEO, ads from $500/mo + spend, and Trade Social.
