Suburb and Service-Area Pages Done Right (Not the Spam Way)

One page per suburb still works, if the pages are real. What Google now ignores, what still ranks, and the honest area-page structure with the local proof to fill it.

Suburb pages remain one of the strongest local SEO plays, and the copy-paste version, twelve identical pages with the suburb name swapped, has been dead weight since the recent core updates. The difference is real content: jobs you have done there, specifics you actually know, proof that you genuinely service the area. Here is the structure that still ranks, and how to fill it honestly.

Why suburb pages work at all

People search where they live: “plumber edmonton”, “electrician smithfield”, “bathroom renovation palm cove”. Your homepage cannot rank for all of them, Google sends each search to the most specific relevant page (the structure principle). A real page per genuine service area gives every one of those searches a correct destination, it is a chunk of how Cairns Auto Works covers 1,751 terms.

What Google now ignores (the spam pattern)

The old trick: write one page, find-and-replace the suburb, publish thirty of them. Post-2026 updates, these thin duplicates are ignored at best and drag the whole site’s quality assessment at worst, they are precisely the “scaled content abuse” the updates target. If you have a pile of these, pruning them is often a rankings gain.

The structure that ranks (copy this)

Section What goes in it Why it works
Local opening Services + the suburb, with real specifics (travel time from your base, how often you are there) Provably local, not templated
Jobs done there 2-3 real jobs in that suburb, photos + one-line stories The unfakeable part, and the ranking core
Suburb-specific notes What you actually know: housing stock ages, common problems, council quirks Information gain nobody can copy
Reviews from there Named reviews from that area when you have them Local proof + naturally local vocabulary
Service list + CTA What you do there, click-to-call, quote form Converts the visit

The honest limits

  • Only pages for areas you genuinely service. A Cairns sparkie with a Townsville page fools nobody, including Google.
  • Build as many as you have real content for, no more. Five real pages beat twenty thin ones, add pages as jobs accumulate in new areas.
  • The jobs feed the pages. This is the quiet superpower of TradeProof: every job you send becomes a case study tagged to its suburb, so area pages grow themselves with exactly the proof this structure needs.

Where suburb pages fit in the bigger machine

They are one layer: profile + reviews win the map pack (that plan), service pages win the trade terms, suburb pages extend your reach beyond your own postcode, and the blog builds the authority all of it leans on. The whole machine assembled: the SEO Cairns guide.

Got a pile of spam suburb pages, or none at all? Both are fixable: book a discovery call and we will map which areas your jobs actually support, then build only those, properly.
