Google Business Profile for Cairns Tradies: The Field-by-Field Guide

The map pack decides who gets the "near me" jobs, and your free Google Business Profile decides who is in it. Field-by-field setup, what actually moves rankings, and the mistakes we fix most often.

The free listing beats the expensive website more often than anyone admits. Your Google Business Profile, the panel with the map that appears when locals search your trade, produces more calls than the site itself for most tradies, and almost every profile we audit is running at half strength: fields empty, categories wrong, photos from 2019. This is the field-by-field fix.

Why the map pack is the prize

For searches like “plumber near me” or “mechanic cairns”, the three map results sit above every normal website result. Those three spots take a huge share of the clicks and calls, especially on mobile, where the call button is right on the listing. Getting into that top three, the map pack, is the single highest-value move in local search. We covered the wider strategy in how to crack the map pack; this guide is the profile itself.

The field-by-field setup

Field Do this Why it matters
Business name Your real name, nothing stuffed in “Smith Plumbing | Best Plumber Cairns” risks suspension
Primary category The single most specific match (e.g. “Emergency plumber” if that is the work you want) The strongest ranking field on the profile
Extra categories Add every genuine service category Each one unlocks more searches
Service areas List the suburbs you actually cover Decides which “near me” searches you can appear for
Hours Real hours, plus holiday updates “Open now” filters are ruthless
Phone + website Same number and URL as your site, exactly Consistency is a trust signal (see NAP consistency)
Services + description Every service listed, plain-English description More matching surface, better conversions
Photos Real jobs, team, vehicles; add monthly Profiles with fresh real photos win clicks from profiles with a logo

What actually moves map rankings

Google has named the three local ranking pillars: relevance (categories, services, keywords in reviews and description), distance (where the searcher stands, which you cannot control), and prominence (reviews, links, mentions, your website’s own authority). In practice, the levers you control rank roughly like this:

  1. Primary category, get it wrong and nothing else matters.
  2. Review flow, volume, recency and replies. A system beats a burst. (The review guide.)
  3. Profile completeness, every empty field is a search you sit out.
  4. Your website, the profile inherits authority from a fast, well-structured site. This is why profile-only “SEO” plateaus. (SEO for tradies covers the pairing.)

The mistakes we fix most often

  • Wrong or generic primary category. “Contractor” when you are an electrician throws away the strongest signal.
  • No service areas set. You cover Smithfield to Edmonton, Google only shows you in your own suburb.
  • Reviews asked once, in 2023. Recency matters. A trickle every month beats a flood once.
  • Unanswered questions and messages. The Q&A section is public; silence looks like closure.
  • Ignoring the posts feature. Almost no tradies post updates, which is exactly why the ones who do stand out.

A realistic weekly routine (10 minutes)

  • Reply to every new review, two sentences is plenty.
  • Add 2-3 photos from this week’s jobs.
  • Post one update: a finished job, an offer, a tip.
  • Check Q&A and messages.

That routine, kept up for six months, beats almost any one-off optimisation. It is also exactly the kind of thing we run for clients inside our SEO campaigns, and the photo flow comes free if you are already sending us jobs through TradeProof or Trade Social.
