Custom vs Template vs AI Websites: What Each Really Gets You
AI builders are impressive, templates are quick, custom is dearer. The honest three-way comparison, including what each option costs you invisibly.
On launch day, all three look like websites. The differences hide in the things a demo never shows you: how fast it loads on a phone in Trinity Beach, whether Google can make sense of the structure, and who actually owns what you paid for. AI builders and templates optimise for launch day; custom optimises for every day after it. Here is the comparison with the marketing stripped out.
The comparison that matters
| AI builder | Template | Custom (hand-built) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch speed | Minutes | Days | 2-6 weeks (timeline) |
| Looks | Generic AI aesthetic | Same theme as thousands | Only you |
| Google speed scores | Mediocre, platform-capped | Usually bloated | 90s (test our builds yourself) |
| Local SEO structure | Fights you | Possible with effort | Built in from the keyword map |
| Proof/case-study engine | No | Rarely | Standard in ours |
| Ownership | Rented, forever | Varies, check hard | Yours outright |
| 5-year cost | $1,500-$3,000 rent | $800 + patches + rebuild | $2,600-$6,100 owned (breakdown) |
What AI builders actually produce
Impressive first drafts of average websites. The copy reads like everyone else’s because it is drawn from the same well, and since the 2026 core updates Google explicitly rewards content with information gain, something new, which generated sites by definition do not have. There is a genuine irony here: AI can now build you a website that AI-era Google is specifically tuned to ignore.
Where templates are genuinely fine
Honesty first: a well-chosen template is fine for a club, a hobby, a CV site, or a placeholder while you save. The problems start when a lead-dependent business runs on one: page-builder bloat drags speed (why that costs rankings), the structure fights local SEO, and you look like your competitor who bought the same theme.
What custom actually buys (beyond looks)
- Speed by construction. Hand-coded pages with nothing wasted. This is measurable, not marketing: run any of our client sites through PageSpeed Insights.
- Structure that ranks. A page per service and suburb, planned from search data before design starts. It is the skeleton behind Cairns Auto Works ranking for 1,751 terms.
- Proof built in. Case studies, review displays, before/afters, the things that convert visitors, standard rather than bolted on.
- An asset. You own it, it compounds, and nobody can reprice your rent. (The ownership guide.)
The decision in one question
Does this website need to bring in work? If no, use a builder with our blessing. If yes, the cheap options are not actually cheap, they just move the cost into jobs you never hear about. The platform version of this argument is in WordPress vs Wix vs Squarespace.
On the fence? Book a discovery call. If your situation genuinely suits a template, we will say so and you will have lost fifteen minutes. If it does not, you will know exactly what the difference costs.
